L’OTTOMAN CULBUTO

The Ottoman Culbuto is a piece of art furniture whose fluid and rounded silhouette evokes the movement of a pendulum.

For this exclusive wooden collection (edition), Galerie Promitto called upon exceptional French artisans. The wood is worked using the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique, which involves burning its surface to reveal its deep textures.

Each crack is a character trait, making each piece unique.

Shou Sugi Ban

Shou Sugi Ban, or Yakisugi, is a traditional Japanese wood treatment technique using carbonization. By burning the surface of the wood, a natural protective layer is created, making it more resistant to weathering, insects, and the wear and tear of time.

Beyond its functional qualities, this method reveals a unique texture, marked by cracks and deep reflections. Each piece becomes unique, displaying a raw, almost mineral aesthetic, where irregularities become defining characteristics.

Today, the Shou Sugi Ban is being rediscovered by designers and artisans for its expressive beauty and its enduring nature.
